I am obese. when I fly I buy two tickets and call ahead to make sure I get them beside each other and preassigned. I understand what a burden I would be if someone was forced to be pressed up against my lard for the entirety of a flight. it's absolutely unfair to the other passenger. I'll either buy two tickets or one first class ticket. I'm glad these guys aren't going so far as to attack fat people because most people do. this is a problem that will only get worse over time, not just because people are getting fatter, but also because the airlines have been making their seats smaller

I don't care why someone is fat. If you don't fit in one seat, pay for two.

Whilst the overweight customer is a paying customer, so is the one who had to stand. No one should have their seat taken because someone else doesn't fit in their seat. That's just absurd. If he paid for that seat, he paid for that seat. He's not the one who doesn't fit.

He absolutely should have been refunded and anyone that obese should have to buy 2 seats that is completely unacceptable to squish anyone because you have chosen to be obese and don’t meet the standard. By forcing someone who paid for a seat not overflowing and making it unsafe and uncomfortable is 100% the responsibility of the airline. Period how awful for a person to have to stand unsafely for 7 hours when they paid for a seat.

If you take up two seats you should have to pay two prices.

This dude could’ve faked falling down when the plane took off, and he could’ve sued the SHIT out of the airline.

I'm an obese person who always buys two seats or flies first class. The thing that drives me CRAZY is how hard the airlines make it to do so! None of the online ordering sites have an option to buy two seats for a single person... you just have to order two seats and then put the same name for the second seat or "My Name Seat #2" or something... and every. single. time. I've done this, even times that I've called to talk to a human being to make sure I did it right, everyone involved at the airline was totally confused about why my name was on two seats or why I had two tickets but only one person showed up. One particular time that still rankles me to think about it: I was doing a manual check-in. I made it clear that I had two seats because I was clearly fat and needed extra space... and yet when I got to my seat, they had not properly logged my extra seat, so there was already someone sitting in the middle seat when I arrived. I got it resolved, but the whole point of paying extra is so that I don't have to face those "OMG, no!" looks I got that day, and it seems like the system refuses to give me a way to do that with any security that I won't pay the extra money and still have a humiliating, terrible experience.

If he payed 800 dollars for a seat but only got half a seat then they should've at LEAST given him half his money back

The big guy should have bought two seats. Period. I say that as a big guy that has done that.

I sat next to a morbidly obese woman recently, who kind of realized she was squashing the shit out of me. I kept polite though and didn't say anything. After 30 minutes when the drinks trolley came, she bought me 10 mini bottles of vodka and a bottle of coke! Literally out of nowhere. Long story short, I got nicely tipsy and fell asleep. Moral of the story: be polite and get drunk.

I use to be morbidly obese and flew. I realized that I was filling up more space than I should. I apologized to the person next to me and bought him drinks. Afterwards I decided that until I lost weight I was going to have to purchase 2 seats. It’s just not fair to other passengers. Thankfully I lost 200 lbs and I’m half my previous size and I fit nicely in one seat. Perhaps an alternative plan for the airlines is to have 1 or 2 “bariatric” seats per flight and charge a bit more for those
