American Secrets
William Henry Harrison's inaugural address ran 8,445 words.
Roughly two hours, outdoors, in early March, reportedly without an overcoat. He was dead thirty-one days later, and the story everyone repeats is that the speech killed him.
The timeline doesn't support it. He didn't fall ill until about three weeks afterward. A 2014 medical analysis pointed instead to enteric fever. Washington had no sewer system then, and the White House water supply sat downstream of a field where the city dumped night soil.
The speech gets the blame because it's a better story than the plumbing.

Before 1939, a president's papers were his personal property.
He could take them home, sell them, burn them, or let his heirs lose them in a fire. Several did. There was no obligation to preserve anything.
Franklin Roosevelt decided that was absurd. He donated land at Hyde Park, raised private money, sketched the building himself, and handed the entire archive to the National Archives.
Every presidential library since exists because one president voluntarily surrendered a property right nobody had asked him to give up. Congress didn't require it of anyone else until 1978.

A lesson in what "founding wealth" was actually worth:
Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, owing roughly $107,000. Not a rounding error. A sum that dwarfed the value of everything he owned.
To settle it, his family sold Monticello. And in January 1827, they auctioned off approximately 130 human beings who had been enslaved there. Families were separated on the lawn of the house he designed.
The plantation aristocracy people romanticize was, structurally, a debt machine collateralized by people. Jefferson was its most articulate defender and one of its more spectacular casualties.

Air Force One is not a plane.
It's a call sign. Any Air Force aircraft becomes Air Force One the moment the president steps aboard, and stops being Air Force One the moment he steps off. The two 747s everyone photographs are technically VC-25s.
The convention exists because of a near-miss in 1953. Eisenhower's flight and a commercial Eastern Air Lines flight were both operating under the number 8610, in the same airspace, at the same time.
Marine One works the same way. So does Navy One, which has been used exactly once, in 2003.
