I had to rent a Motorola Iridium phone for the owner of the company I worked for in the early 2000s. He went on a cruise in antartica and wanted if for any emergency. I had to test it before his depature and I think the one minute test call was about 15USD and the phone rent was some hundreds USD for 3 weeks. It was delivered in a simple but waterproof plastic box that could even float.
