Being constantly ridiculed for something like your physical appearance, your race or something of that sort can have long-term effects on a person's psyche though. "It's just words" is easy to say once you've become numb to it or have never been subjected to something of that sort. I do agree that free speech includes hate speech though; if someone uses that as an excuse to be an asshole well then they are, in fact an asshole.

Speech should be free, but it can trigger violent responses in the ignorant, so speech is perhaps best used to enlighten and educate.
