I feel like alot of nihilists just use the ideology as a coping mechanism. They're unhappy with how their lives are or how the world is going, so they convince themselves they just don't care because that's easier than trying to make a change.

You’re missing the point. There’s much more nuance that you’re glossing over simply because you haven’t been exposed to enough of the world yet. He’s still the same guy, but yes, he HAS done a lot of personal growth. It’s not “going woke” to learn more about the world and how you fit into it.
